HIRA
Health and safety legislation is intended to ensure that employers and employees act responsibly regarding health and safety within the workplace.

If an incident or accident occurs, employers are required to prove that they have acted responsibly in the prevention of accidents and in the preservation of health. Risk Assessment refers to the process of evaluating risks to workers’ safety and health from hazards in the workplace.

Have you carried out Risk Assessments? Have the risks in your workplace been monitored and reviewed on a regular basis? We recommend that anyone involved in this critical activity attend our E-Learning course, which coaches you through the process of planning, implementing and monitoring Risk Assessments.

What is the goal of this course?

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, every employer is required to carry out a risk assessment for their workplace, which should identify any hazards present in the workplace, assess the risks arising from such hazards and identify the steps to be taken to deal with any risks.

The purpose of this course is to ensure compliance with legal requirements regarding risk assessment.
Our E-Learning course has been designed as a blended learning of self study and classroom sessions.

Which topics will be covered?

1.    Hazard Identification - In this step the hazards that could impact your working environment are identified.

This requires a review of all hazards and their causes to determine whether they may be a threat to your health and/or safety.

2.    Risk Assessment - In this step the level of risk for each hazard is examined.

3.    Risk Analysis - The information collected in the risk assessment step will be analyzed in this step.

4.    The desired outcome of the risk analysis is the ranking of the hazards. This highlights the hazards that should be considered a current priority for your emergency management program.

5.    Monitor and Review - It is important to remember that a HIRA is an ongoing process and hazards and their

associated risks must be monitored and reviewed.

Which teaching method do we use?

The course follows a blended format where the modules contain some or all of the following aspects:

•    animated slides
•    demonstrations
•    videos
•    simulations
•    games
•    practical examples.

The course is outcomes based, therefore you are not required to just memorise the information.

You will receive support throughout the course by our experienced facilitators, via email, as well as whats app group chats.

You will be required to show your competency by being able to demonstrate what you have learned. You will also be required to do some workplace learning, by assignments given to you.

How will learners be assessed?

Theory

Only the theory part of the course will be tested via online activities e.g.

•    quizzes at the end of each module
•    knowledge questionnaire

Practical

After completion of the Online Theory part of the course, you will need to download the practical assignment.
Students will have to demonstrate their practical skills by completing a workplace risk assessment.
A generic template is available to use during your workplace inspection.
Note: Should your Company have their own risk assessment template, you are welcome to use that.

The completed assignment (signed by your immediate supervisor - if you are employed), must be emailed to learn@risktrainingsolutions.co.za.
